Abstract

Papain is a protease enzyme extracted from Carica papaya L. and is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Its application in cosmetics as a natural anti-inflammatory agent has been increasingly explored. This study aims to analyze publication trends related to the use of papain in cosmetics as an anti-inflammatory agent through a bibliometric approach. Data were collected from Google Scholar using the keywords “papain,” “carica papaya,” “anti-inflammatory,” and “cosmetic formulation” for the period 2017–2025. Articles were filtered using Publish or Perish, managed through Mendeley, and analyzed with VOSviewer to generate network, overlay, and density visualizations. The analysis identified four clusters with a total of 38 interrelated key terms. The network visualization highlighted key research topics such as “inflammatory,” “carica papaya,” and “cosmetic formulation” as dominant themes in the literature. The overlay visualization revealed a shift in research focus from basic pharmacological studies to practical cosmetic formulations in recent years. The density visualization identified frequently discussed topics, such as “inflammatory” and “application,” as central points of attention. Geographically, the United States and the United Kingdom dominated the number of publications, driven by strong interest in natural active ingredients in cosmetics. This study concludes that papain holds significant potential as an active ingredient in anti-inflammatory cosmetic formulations. Further research with broader data coverage and collaborative analysis is needed to support the development of papain-based cosmetic products in the future.
